Jiaogulan Supports Equine Immune Systems
Fuente et al. 2005 highlight in their review that antioxidants play a vital role in supporting and strengthening the immune system by reducing oxidative stress. Building on this concept, Li et al. (1993) conducted a study examining the antioxidant properties of gypenosides, the active compounds found in jiaogulan, on murine macrophages. These macrophages, which are specialized white blood cells in mice, serve as a critical defense mechanism against pathogens and are essential for maintaining immune function. The researchers discovered that gypenosides significantly reduced oxidative injury within these cells, thereby preserving their integrity and functionality. This finding suggests that jiaogulan contributes to immune health in two complementary ways. First, it delivers potent antioxidant protection to immune cells, shielding them from damage caused by free radicals. Second, jiaogulan enhances blood circulation, which facilitates the efficient transport of white blood cells to areas where pathogens may be present, improving the body’s ability to respond to infections (Kellon 2006). Together, these mechanisms underscore jiaogulan’s potential as a natural immune-supporting agent.
